Two women in the studio last spring, both trying on the same three chains. One picked the paperclip in about four seconds. The other kept coming back to the bar chain and finally said it was because you could see through it.
That is the difference. A bar chain necklace is not a continuous line, it is stations of polished bar with gaps between them, so it sits on skin instead of covering it. Lighter on the eye and lighter on the neck.
It also converts five ways using a hidden magnetic clasp. 28.5 inches long, doubled to a choker, wrapped four times as a bracelet, clipped to your glasses, or holding your earbuds. Gold plated brass, nickel free, carded and ready to give.
What Makes a Bar Chain Different
Instead of continuous links, a bar chain sets short polished bars at intervals along a fine connecting chain. The gaps are the point. Where a snake chain reads as a solid line and a paperclip reads as texture, a bar chain reads as rhythm, and it is the only one of the three that lets skin show through the design.
It is also the lightest of the four convertible styles by a noticeable margin, which matters when you are wearing 28.5 inches of it as an eyeglass chain for eight hours.
Five Ways to Wear a Bar Chain Necklace
Long Necklace
Full 28.5 inches, sitting low on the chest. The spacing between bars is what keeps this length from reading heavy, which is why it layers under a blazer or over a crew neck without competing with anything.
Choker
Doubled to two loops of roughly 14 inches. The offset stations mean the two passes rarely line up exactly, which produces a scattered effect rather than a doubled one.
Bracelet Wrap
Four wraps on a standard wrist. This is the configuration where the bar stations do the most work, since each pass catches light at a different angle instead of reading as four identical rows.
Eyeglass Chain
Silicone loops onto the temple arms of any frame. Worn this way the bar stations sit against the sides of the neck, which is the detail people notice before they realize it is holding glasses.
Earbud Holder
Lobster clasp connectors to your earbuds or AirPods case. They stay at the collarbone through a commute or a workout rather than disappearing into a bag.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a bar chain necklace at 28.5 inches on an average frame?
Worn full length it sits low on the chest, several inches below a standard 18 inch necklace. That length is deliberate, since it is what allows the fold to a choker and the four wraps to a bracelet. Doubled you get roughly 14 inches per loop, and four wraps fits a wrist up to about 7 inches.
Do the bars lie flat or do they twist?
They lie flat worn as a necklace, because the weight of each bar settles it face out against the chest. In the bracelet configuration a bar occasionally rolls, which is a characteristic of station chains generally rather than a defect, and it settles again within a few movements of the wrist.
Bar chain, snake, or paperclip, which one is right for me?
Bar if you want the lightest option and something that shows skin through the design, which suits high necklines and layering. Snake if you want a smooth continuous line that disappears into an outfit. Paperclip if you want the chain itself to read as a visible statement. All three are 28.5 inches and convert the same five ways.
Is the magnetic clasp visible when worn?
No. On this style the clasp is sized to match the bar stations, so it reads as one more bar rather than as hardware. That is the reason we call it hidden on this chain and not on the others, where the closure is more obviously a closure.
What is the one thing most likely to ruin the plating?
Water, followed closely by hairspray. Take it off before the shower, the pool, and the gym, and put it on after everything else in your routine including perfume and lotion. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth and skip dips, polishes, and ultrasonic cleaners, which strip plating rather than restore it.
Will this suit someone who already owns a lot of fine jewelry?
Yes, and it tends to land better with that person than with someone building a first collection. Anyone who already wears gold daily will recognize what a station chain does that a solid one cannot, and the eyeglass function solves a problem she has whether or not she has admitted it. It arrives carded with all five configurations explained.
Who should not buy this?
Not for anyone with a pacemaker or implanted cardiac device, since the closure is magnetic. Not for children under five, because of the small parts. And if you want a chain with visual weight, this is the wrong one of the four, since the whole design is built around taking weight out.
Why Camille Jewelry
Every convertible chain we make had to pass the same test, which is whether I still wanted it on by four in the afternoon. This is the one that wins on a long day, purely because you stop noticing it is there.
Hand assembled in small batches. If you are building a collection of pieces you actually reach for, start with our guide to starting a jewelry wardrobe.
Made to Wear Every Day
Twenty years designing fine jewelry in New York taught me one thing. The pieces women keep are the ones they forget they are wearing.
So that is what I design for now, under my own name. Jewelry that goes on in the morning and stays on, through work, the gym, and everything after.
It shows up in the details. Proportions that sit right. Clasps and mechanisms that work the first time and the hundredth. Nothing that digs in at the back of your neck.
Gold or silver plated thick over jeweler's brass. Not gold filled, not solid gold, and priced accordingly. This is the tier where the design does the work, not the metal.
Jewelry you put on and keep on.

Materials & Quality
Gold or silver plated thick over jeweler's brass, nickel and lead free. Not gold filled, not solid gold, and priced for the fashion tier, where the design does the work rather than the metal.
Plating wears. Everyone's does. What changes is how long it takes, and that part is mostly up to you. Because the gold and silver here sit thick over jeweler's brass, there is real material to work with before anything shows through. Look after it and you get years out of it.
This is the tier where care actually makes a difference:
- Water is the one that matters. Off before the pool, the ocean, the shower, and the gym.
- Lotion and perfume first, jewelry last.
- A soft cloth is all it needs. Silver cloths, dips, and ultrasonics all strip plating.
- Store it dry and in its pouch.
